The most important factors in one's achievement is to have the proper mindset and effort. It is entirely up to us to achieve or not to achieve. The power of one's heart and mind is more than one can imagine. External factors that appear to affect us are all illusions created by our senses and emotions. But when we let our True Buddha Nature be our master, all those illusions disappear. That's the goal of cultivation: to become fully aware of and to fully realize our True Buddha Nature.
